Flowers are a great way to spruce up any space, but what if you don’t have room for a garden? What if you don’t even have a yard or balcony? Luckily, even the smallest of spaces can accommodate a window box. Planter windows are a great way to add a little color to your outdoor space whether you have some grass or not. They can be fitted in apartments, condos, and houses alike for plant lovers in every stage of life. They’re not just great for flowers, though, you can also plant herbs for cooking right outside your kitchen window so all your food benefits from the goodness of fresh ingredients.
Sunny Plants
There are tons of different ways to choose what goes in your window box, but the first consideration should be how much sun the box will get during the day. Different plants thrive in different environments, so if your box gets full sun, you’ll want to choose plants who love those conditions. Some plants that love sun and will stand upright and take up little space in your box include lavender, marigolds, bush basil, and rosemary. You can always mix and match herbs and flowers in your miniature garden to give the space some texture and variety.
Shady Plants
Other plants prefer a cooler house with less direct sunlight. Maybe in this location you want more plants that will trail their tails and vines around the box to make it look extra full of life. Some good options include sweeping myrtle, peppermint, or wandering jew. Keep an eye on your peppermint plant if you put it in with other flowers or herbs because it tends to take over an area once its thriving and will spread faster than you think!
Branching Out
Finally, if you love your window box but want the fauna to extend beyond its barriers, consider adding in some climbing plants to creep up your window frame and wall. For sunny spots, you can try honeysuckle or jasmine, which both have pleasant scents as they bloom. Or in shady spots you can plant some sweet autumn clematis or a trumpet vine. Like the peppermint, the climbing plants can quickly take over an area, so make sure to pay attention to them and trim the vines as needed.
If you don’t have a yard, you can still have flowers by installing a window box and filling it with your favorite plants.
